1. Planning Technology Initiatives a. Vision/Goal Statements:
The vision of this technology plan is to increase the access and to ease the use of user generated digital information. It will also ease it’s integration into the classroom, by allowing the convenient and fast access to stored information. This will allow for students to create visual projects and ideas from their 9th grade year until their 12th grade year while having continual access to past projects. This will allow for original content that was created in the past to be accessed in allowing for students to build skills and increase knowledge.
The goal of this committee will be to allow teachers and students associated with this combined education department access to a large central storage server. Department staff members will have permissions enabled so they can create digital folders for students to save work, while being able to access and monitor them. Each teacher will also be able to store presentations, videos, and course content for students to access and utilize while enrolled. This will help facilitate and ease the teaching process due to having local control and being able to customize controls for each learning environment.
b. Current Technology Policies: Presently the school district supplies digital storage space on remote servers at a remote school building. However this storage space, while very reliable, is very limited. The present designation for the storage area on networked computers is labeled (P) students and teachers have their own folder that they can access to save and delete files, only the network administrator is allowed to view and change users folders. Teachers who allow students to store class projects on the system are not able to see what is stored under the student’s name. This becomes problematic when students miss school or are part of a group project and the information is not accessible for use.
Storage on the current system is limited to 80 gigabytes of information. When this becomes full, staff and students are asked to delete saved files or they could be lost due to a crash. This is averted many times by automatically deleting files on the server that have not been accessed for more than 18 months. Many important files have been lost due to this, and once they are deleted they are not retrievable.
c. Decision Making The technology committee for Art/Tech Ed Department Server is made up of five teachers, three of the teachers are from the Tech Ed department, and two teachers are from the Art department. Also a district computer support technician has agreed to serve as an advisor on physical technology implementation. All stake holders will be able to voice their concerns or ideas. This has been made available by the Google survey setup that any department member can take. A majority decision must be reached for committee plans to go forward and all committee member will have an equal vote.
d. Communication
Much of the communication for the committee will be through emails and personal contact. However the Wiki web site http://techedartstorage.wikispaces.com/ has been setup for members to post ideas and information. Having members from both sides of the joined department will support the information gathering and dissemination process thus allowing all staff directly affected by the plan to have representation.
